Godfrey B. Tangwa was born in Shisong, Nso, Bui Division, in the North West Province of Cameroon, West Africa. He attended secondary school at St. Joseph's College Sasse, Buea, Cameroon. He obtained his B.A. (Honours) in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria, where he won both the University of Nigeria Foundation Award for academic excellence (1975) and the Fodio Prize for the best graduating student (1977). In 1979, he obtained his M.A. (Philosophy) from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Nigeria, and in 1984, his Ph.D. (Philosophy) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His area of doctoral specialization is Epistemology and Metaphysics but he has acquired considerable competence in several other areas of philosophy such as Bioethics, African Philosophy, Social-Political Philosophy etc. His main preoccupation is with practical and applied philosophy, that is, the application of philosophy to practical human problems.
Godfrey B. Tangwa lectured at the University of Ife, Nigeria, from 1978-1986. He joined the University of Yaounde, Cameroon, in 1987 as a Senior Lecturer and is presently an Associate Professor (Maitre de Conference) since 1999 at the University of Yaounde 1. From October 1994 to June 1996, he was an Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung fellow at the Universities of Munich and Bayreuth in Germany. He has been a member of the International Association of Bioethics (IAB) since inception in 1992, served on its Board of Directors from 1997 to 2003, and was Vice-President of the Association from 1999-2001. He is a prolific writer and his publications in academic journals, magazines and newspapers span a wide range of issues. He is also a first rate amateur play/film actor and a keen tennis player.
Dr. Tangwa has extensive play/film acting and directing experience spanning about 25 years. Acted the lead role in over 20 plays/films and directed about 7. He created the Flame Players in Yaounde, Cameroon, in 1987 who have to their credit, to date, 12 stage plays and Television Films.
He is also a prolific writer in newspapers and magazines. He was a regular columnist (No Trifling Matter, Cocktail, In the Spirit of Gobata, etc.) for the Cameroon Post (1990-1994 & 1996-1998) and a regular contributor to Cameroon Life and the SOBA magazine.
